At only 100 or so pages of actual English and not the Old English that is written in its original form on the side, it seemed the least daunting of the famous epic poems to tackle. And adding to that length the content was deep, yet very easily understood from an initial reading thanks to the translation’s elegant prose, making the read not only short in length but quick in absorption. Everything depends on the translation, and for a work as old and remote as this, the translation really has to be an original work in its own right while retaining its character as a translation. This is nearly impossible, yet Heaney pulls it off. Fabulous.
