Description

Carmichaels became home to the Greene Academy, notably, the first school of higher learning west of the Allegheny Mountains. Both the Greene Academy and the Carmichaels Covered Bridge are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.. The settlement known as Old Town was founded in 1767. Carmichael had traded his land in what is now the town of Jefferson for land owned by Thomas Hughes along the banks of Muddy Creek in Old Town. Cumberland Township, located in the northeastern portion of Greene County, was one of Pennsylvania's original townships. James Carmichael, a Revolutionary War soldier and pioneer settler. Excellent writing, history and pictures By Jenni Excellent writing, history and pictures! I spent many holidays and summers at my grandparents' home in Carmichaels. It was nostalgic for my mom and me to look at pictures that brought back many memories. Imagine my surprise at seeing my Grandpa Zoldos' store and even my Aunt Dolores Zoldos when she was a young teacher. Whoever would have guessed that she would become the first woman Superintendent of Schools in the state of Pennsylvania as well as Superintendent of the Carmichaels Area School Distrct in the future??
