Signs of a great Trek author include knowing your characters, their idiosyncrasies the dynamics between them, knowing your canon & keeping up to date on the trek literature, lastly still finding an interesting story to tell about people & characters written about for decades. In all of these things Dayton Ward succeeds, this book kept me hooked, going between two time periods and weaving a tale through the centuries. While this is fabulous as a stand alone . On the whole, I feel frustrated by secret orders sent to Picard and a junior crewmember that never actually pan out in the book. Instead, the reader is left with more questions than answers.This story starts with an admiral beginning to warn Captain Picard about a planet the Enteprise is approaching. However, Picard can't be trusted with the whole story, so a a junior officer gets more of the details and is asked to keep watch on the captain. These secre. 11.
