Description

They enabled some of our nation’s major cities to grow and flourish. From the earliest rudimentary conveyances to the floating palaces of the present day, a period of 200 years, steamboats have carved out a very special place in American history, especially along the Mississippi River and its tributaries, where they brought passengers, cargo, mail, entertainment, and newsboth good and badto the settlements of a still-developing nation. Told through historic photographs in these pages, the story of steamboats that plied the Mississippi and the glorious era they symbolized is vividly captured and enshrined for generations to come.. With paddle-wheels churning, tall smokestacks billowing, calliopes singing, and steam whistles sounding, the steamboats of the Mighty Mississippi proudly ruled the river. Some offered all the comforts of home (and more); others did the work for the industries that transformed the United States into the industrial giant it became. They carried presidents and kings, socialites and commoners, cotton and coal, lumber and steel

Pictures way too dark. Although I haven't read it through, the only beef I have with it is the photos. They are very dark. It seems the photos were way over exposed, or the publisher had too much ink flowing, what ever the case, you can't see much in the way of details. This drastically takes away from the enjoyment of reading the book. I bought it mainly for the details, as I also model these boats, but it is almost useless as far as that goes. It's not worth my time or expense returning it, so I will keep it. But I am not entirely happy about it. At least the test and history are interesting.. Steamboats of the Mississippi River Ron I found the book "Historic Photos of Steamboats on the Mississippi" to be a very well illustrated picture history of the subject.I was working on a model project pertaining to the River towns and its steamboats and this book provided many wonderful photos to go by. If you are looking for a good, overall book to cover an interest of this famous era in American history this book will go a long way to help you.My only complaint about the book would be that a good many of the photos are not exactly clear. It is the old problem of very old primitive photography producing less-than clear photo. "River Romantic" according to J. P. M. Smit. Very delightful book! a whole history of the typical wheeling steam-boats on the Mississippi River. The same vessels who spreading the Jazz Music from New Orleans to all the parts of US, and of course the whole world! All the black and white pictures are particular lovely! Thanks!
