This is the story of How to Lose a Kingdom in 400 Years.Throughout the political turmoil of 1–2 Kings, God's prophets brought messages of hope, warning, and judgment. Unsurpassed in riches, power, and prestige, Solomon embodied the pinnacle of God's blessing on his people. But the mistakes of long-dead kings, not to mention the messages of heroic men of God, offer wisdom to spiritual Israel today. In a world where political power, cultural relevance, and self-sufficiency seduce the church at every turn, 1–2 Kings reverberates with the warning that nothing is more important than submission to the King of kings. In 586 B.C., Israel's capital collapsed before Nebuchadnezzar, and the nation was exiled in disgrace far away to Babylon. During his reign, Israel became the envy of the nations. In 970 B.C., Solomon ben David ascended his father's throne. I recommend this book to anyone willing to learn add me - Trae W. Wow! Michael Whitworth has done an exceptional job commenting on 1 and 2 Kings. From the beginning of "How to Lose a Kingdom in 400 Years" I was captured with a fresh view of the source material. I've read and listened to 1 and 2 Kings before and did not pick up on some of the smaller details and nuances that Michael points out concerning the end of David's reign and the beginning of Solomon's. For example, I've never given much attention to the young lady being appointed to keep David warm. I've read that and glossed right over that never considering why . "Ancient History as Relevant as Tomorrow's Newspaper" according to Amazon Customer. Michael Whitworth manages to take a section of scripture that can seem tedious and incomprehensible and makes it fascinating and understandable. He includes all of the information you might find in an excellent commentary, but in an easy to read storytelling style that makes reading a joy.
