SS Canberra

SS Canberra
Description
Illustrated with many unpublished photos, this is a captivating history of the "Great White Whale.". She was involved in the Falklands War and sailed directly in to the war zone to offload troops and take wounded soldiers back to the U.K., but it is her last years serving as a cruise ship for which she will be best remembered. In 1981 she carried fully half of all those sailing on a cruise from the UK. SS Canberra was the last ocean liner to be built by Harland & Wolff—builder of the Titanic—and she sailed on the P&O route to Australia, taking emigrants to the Antipodes
Concise "Canberra" Having traveled on her a couple of times and being Sydneysider, I have a soft spot for "Canberra". Have read and collected several books on her history and was interested to see what Bill Miller has to say about her from his 'transatlantic' perspective. A good potted history especially covering her troublesome early years and near early demise in the 80s. Happily she showed her potential as a cruise liner. "Keep up the great work - Mr. Miller" according to R. Lepien. I've been a fan of Mr. Miller for years - back when he and "Mr. Ocean Liner" (Frank O. Braynard) did books together - I'm glad that Mr. Miller has continued writing these little gems for us people who love ships - particularly ocean liners. He does a great balance between interior and exterior views and although many refer to them as a "picture book" - I find the text also very informative.. Wonder Ship! Of the recent efforts by WHM, this one might be the best of the lot on terms of photos and information. One surprising takeaway is the many negative comments about this ship by her former crew. Who knew? Unfortunately this book also has many of the cheap and cheesy qualities that now attend his publications.
William H. Miller has written more than 200 books on ocean liners.
