An Active Diorama of 19th Century Characters J. Klein As is usual for Simmons, this is a well-written piece of historical fiction or historical mystery (I find his SF and historical novels the best, the "horror" fiction somewhat less so, and the cop/thriller genre almost seems like it is being written by someone else, it is often so bad). It does come off as a bit of an author's fantasy novel, with multiple famous writers coming in contact with one another giving Simmons the chance to imagine how they would interact. In addition . I love the way he writes and all the historical detail This is the second novel I've read by Dan Simmons. I love the way he writes and all the historical detail. The first book I read was "Drood," which I judged the second one by. Really got into the story of Charles Dickens and all the characters in that time period. Thought he did a terrific job with that book. The Fifth Heart was really good but in my opinion Drood was even better. Both books are really worth reading.. Add this to your to read list! I absolutely admire this author! He must do so much research with his books! They are part true and historical, while the added novel parts blend in and become believable. ALmost! In 1893, Sherlock Holmes and Henry James come to America together to solve the mystery of the 1885 death of Clover Adams, wife of the esteemed historian Henry Adams--member of the Adams family that has given the United States two Presidents. Clover's suicide appears to be more than it at first seemed; the suspected foul play may involve matters of national importance.Holmes is currently on his Great Hiatus--his three-year absence after Reichenbach Falls during which time the people of London believe him to be deceased. Holmes has faked his own death because, through his powers of ratiocination, the great detective has come to the conclusion that he is a fictional character. This leads to serious complications for James--for if his esteemed fellow investigator is merely a work of fiction, what does that make him? And what can the master storyteller do to fight against the sinister power -- possibly named Moriarty -- that may or may not be controlling them from the shadows?
