The Sky Below: A True Story of Summits, Space, and Speed
Description
A global nomad raised in the shadow of NASA’s Apollo missions, Parazynski never lost sight of his childhood dream to one day don a spacesuit and float outside the airlock. In an era that transitioned from moon shots to the Space Shuttle, space station, and Mars research, Parazynski flies with John Glenn, tests jet packs, trains in Russia to become a cosmonaut, and flies five missions to outer space (including seven spacewalks) in his seventeen-year NASA career. An unparalleled, visceral opportunity to understand what it’s like to train for—and deploy to—a home in zero gravity, The Sky Below also portrays an astronaut’s engagement with the challenges of his life on Earth, including raising a beau
Famous people have real lives just like everyone else; some are just more extraordinary. From underwater to the top of Everest to the ISS, Scott carried me along as if I was right there alongside of him. Scott is truly a friend that loves at all times.” —Evelyn Husband Thompson, author of High Calling: The Courageous Life and Faith of Space Shuttle Columbia Commander Rick Husband. He picked up my parents at the airport the day of the tragedy and brought them to my grief-stricken home. This mindset certainly fueled our great nation since its founding, and even took us to the moon during the Apollo program. He even ushered at my wedd

Rob Natiuk said Gripping true story, rarely matched adventures, well-written, inspiring. MUCH ON THE PLUS SIDE. This book more than lives up to its title – “A true story of summits, space, and speed.” The personal and team adventures, inner and outer, of astronaut Scott Parazynski go beyond just space travel. We go to the top of the world twice, for Scott also takes us along on his two Mt. Everest climbs, harrowing and wondrous. He did his successful climb in his older years. How he relates the challenges with his earlier space travel brings out many insights into human endurance and “true grit.” Advent. Florida Shopper said Great book cursed with poor design.. Scott Parazynski has some very interesting stories to tell. Like many astronauts, he tells them in a way that skips the flowery language and poetic metaphors. That's not a bad thing. Something about people who could brag choosing not to makes for more powerful reading. At times the technical details left me a little unable to picture what was happening, or understand the dangers in, for example, a perilous rock climbing expedition. I honestly prefer being briefly lost to other authors who will devote whole chapters to teaching you intricate detai. Debbie H said Great book about getting into Space. Well written book about Scott's life and what drove him to become an astronaut. How he sought adventure as a youth, moved frequently as a child, and got a medical degree that was a great asset in the astronaut program. How all these things ended up leading him into his life's journey.Really enjoyed his stories about space travel, hiking, rock climbing, Mt Everest, and finally to Antarctica.
