If you are a Van Halen fan, a real Van Halen fan, this book is a must read." -- Brian Koppelman, screenwriter of Rounders and Ocean's Thirteen, director of Solitary Man, and podcaster at The Moment"I thought I knew a lot about Van Halen, until I read this book. So to stumble across this level of research about the early days of VH is like hearing studio-quality demos of songs you did not even know existed." -- Chuck Klosterman, author of Fargo Rock City and Killing Yourself

Renoff did his research but but some of the facts are really pretty meaningless. He is great at crediting his sources THfromMA Its taking me forever to read this book. Its obvious Mr.Renoff did his research but but some of the facts are really pretty meaningless. He is great at crediting his sources but did I really need to know that Sally Smith remembers the time that the pre-pre-pre-pre version of Van Halen used to play really loud? "The band played loud sets early on" would have saved dozens of chapters. I hope it gets better but its a tedious read.. A must read for any Van Halen fan or musician that wants a real and sobering insight into what it takes to make it. I grew up not far from the Van Halen “Rising” epicenter. But alas, I was too young at the time to know about, much less take part in, this scene. This book does a great job of transporting the reader back to this special time and space and provides a virtual experience which can be embellished my your own imagination.I became a Van Halen fan shortly after the release of Van Halen 1. As a pre-teen, just learning to play guitar, Van Halen was life changing. As a teenager I actually had the fortunate opportunity to take guitar lesson from Terry Kilgore. First and foremost, I am a lifelong Van Halen fan since 1978.I have been following the band since I moved to L.A., and my youth was formed around the music scene there since 1978 to 1985.The book provides me some refreshed memories of backyard parties and auditorium gatherings where bands played live. I wish I had seen the mighty Van Halen in its formative years but this book takes you back in time.I have my memories of what bands I saw but now I can certainly see where all the luster and bluster for hard rock comes from. I just saw them in concert this year and was glad that the book plus the tour made th

The quartet’s classic 1978 debut, Van Halen, sold more than a million copies within months of release and rocketed the band to the stratosphere of rock success. By the year’s end, Van Halen had established themselves as superstars and reinvigorated heavy metal in the process.Based on more than 230 original interviews — including with former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and power players like Pete Angelus, Marshall Berle, Donn Landee, Ted Templeman, and Neil Zlozower — Van Halen Rising is the first book to tell the untold story of how these rock legends made the unlikely journey from Pasadena, California, to the worldwide stage.. After years of gigging everywhere from suburban backyards to dive bars, Van Halen — led by frontman extraordinaire David Lee Roth and guitar virtuoso Edward Van Halen — had the songs, the swagger, and the talent to turn the rock world on its ear. On tour, Van Halen’s high-energy show wowed audiences and prompted headlining acts like Black Sabbath to concede that they’d been blown off the stage
